Join me in my Family E-Kit Challenge (inspired by The Great Shakeout) where we will build family emergency kits in easy weekly steps! This week’s challenge is to collect Lights and Batteries!
I recommend splurging on higher quality light brands over value brands because less expensive lights seem to malfunction pretty quickly and in the event of an emergency, you won’t want to deal with a light that doesn’t work properly. Be sure to have at least one or two lantern style lamps for group and dwelling use as well as an individual light for each member of your household, for personal use and in case your group has to split up. Purchase and store (appropriately sized) batteries along with your lights. I keep our new batteries stored in a bag (not in the light) to avoid the risk of batteries corroding inside the light. I also keep a pack of solar lights on hand, just in case. They don’t light really well, but if we ever ran out of batteries they would work better than having nothing at all. I recommend against using a flame lantern (kerosene) due to the fire and carbon monoxide risks.
